RAND THOMPSON

Architect AIBC, OAA, NSAA, ASSOC. AIA, MRAIC

It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of
Rand Thompson, founding Partner at Chernoff Thompson
Architects. We lost our dear advisor and friend on
September 17, 2018.

Rand was born in Vancouver, B.C. in 1945. He obtained his
architectural education at the University of British Columbia and
worked at the firms of Aitken Bozyk Architects, Bain Burroughs
Hanson, Raimet Architects and Arthur Erickson Architects prior
to forming Chernoff Thompson Architects in 1981 with Russell
Chernoff. Throughout his career Rand contributed to the
Architectural Institute of British Columbia as a mentor
to Intern Architects, a member of Oral Review committees
and was instrumental as Chair of the Competitions Committee
in formulating the rules associated with conducting
architectural competitions. He also acted as professional
advisor on three major public facilities – the Vancouver
Public Library, the Victoria Convention Centre,
and the Royal Theatre in Victoria B.C.

Rand has been a key person in the success of Chernoff Thompson
Architects for 37 years through his contributions as a designer
of many significant projects, and his mentoring of younger
colleagues, providing both professional and personal guidance
with passion and spirit. With equal joy, Rand worked closely
with all his Clients, striving to understand their visions
and to provide the right solution for their projects.
His strong personal interest in architectural practice
as a business has also played a pivotal role in the
firm’s management.

Rand was also noted as a pioneer in computer applications for
architectural practice, and he had a keen interest in the
firm as a business. Rand’s lasting legacy will live through
his numerous works and through the work of all
of us who were profoundly influenced by his spirit.
His insightful contributions and commitment to the firm,
colleagues and the profession of architecture leaves
a foundation for continued success. He will be missed.

There will be a celebration of Rand’s life
Saturday, October 27 at 4:00pm at the
West Vancouver Yacht Club.
