UNIVERSITY

Chernoff Thompson Architects has designed major buildings on several university campuses, the University of British Columbia, the University of Northern British Columbia, the University of Victoria, Simon Fraser University, & the University of Washington. Our work includes design, construction documents, tendering, & contract admin services for various buildings on these campuses. We also have designed commercial research facilities on the UVIC, UBC & BCIT campuses which may be seen on the research page.

TASC 2 WET & DRY LABORATORY
Simon Fraser University

A 12,674 sm new wet/dry laboratory building for a range of research activities with support office space, for highly specialized research laboratories including life sciences. The design incorporates a generic, modular, highly flexible approach to the building layout and services. The TASC2 building as part of the campus pedestrian network system, includes two major public spaces which provide naturally lit transition and gathering spaces for the enjoyment of users. A Canada Foundation for Innovation Grant is a significant contributer to the funding.

UVIC BOB WRIGHT CENTRE
University of Victoria

A 12,685 sm new wet/dry laboratory building to accommodate a wide range of teaching and research activities. The initial uses include teaching, labs, research labs & offices for earth and ocean sciences, chemistry and astronomy, plus large lecture theatres. Chernoff Thompson Architects provided a facility program concurrent with the schematic design which incorporates modular generic concepts that facilitate flexibility for users, planning and access to services.

MEDICAL SCIENCES BUILDING
University of Victoria

A 4,040 sm building that houses medical teaching and research as part of the UBC undergraduate physician training program. This building comprises the University of Victoria portion of the distributed model in partnership with British Columbia Medical Training. Key features of the building include lecture theatres, laboratory, and gross anatomy lab facilities. In addition, the building provides space for conventional teaching, small group distance education seminars, faculty office and flexible research labs. This building was awarded GOLD LEED certification.

MASTER PLAN
University of the Fraser Valley

The University of the Fraser Valley acquired an 85 acre land parcel in Chilliwack, B.C., which was surplus as a military base. Chernoff Thompson Architects is currently working with the University-College of the Fraser Valley to develop a sustainable Campus Master Plan through an inclusive, consultative process that will incorporate reusable existing facilities and a plan for future buildings.

CHILLIWACK TRADES & TECHNOLOGY FACILITY
University of the Fraser Valley

The University of the Fraser Valley has initiated its first facility for the new campus which is the renovation of a 9,860 sm existing service building into a new "state of the art" trades training facility. Implementation of the project is through a design/build process with Chernoff Thompson Architects working in collaboration with Giffels Partnership Solutions Inc.

INTEGRATED SCIENCE CENTRE
Vancouver Island University

A proposed new 4,250 sm Integrated Science Centre & 3,700 sm Western Campus Redevelopment Project to provide new and renovated facilities for the University to accommodate additional student spaces. The vision is to maximize the integration of Science and Technology programs, currently housed in four separate buildings, into a new Integrated Science Centre. The centre will include the International Centre for Sturgeon Studies and renovations for Liberal Studies, Arts, Music and Education.

GATV Technology Research Park - Phase 1
GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

In its 11,148 sm new research park, Georgia Institute of Technology is constructing a highly flexible multi-tenant research building for lease to private organizations in their new Technology Enterprise Research Park. The facility will be capable of accommodating a wide range of research (wet or dry) and facilitating economical, minimum disruption change over the life of the building. Project team is a collaboration of Chernoff Thompson Architects and Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart & Associates Inc.

CICSR/CS BUILDING
University of British Columbia

This is a 9,847 sm computer research & teaching building for CICSR (now ICICS) and the department of Computer Science. A portion of the building includes undergraduate classrooms and computer labs. The design incorporates recessed windows for weather protection, precast concrete and porcelain metal exterior finishes and landscaped sloped entry walkways to provide full accessibility to the main entry. The building was awarded CBIP Certification.

TEACHING LABORATORY BUILDING
University of Northern British Columbia

A 6,038 sm teaching laboratory for the University of Northern British Columbia to accommodate undergraduate teaching space for science and social science departments. The approach to this building is to provide generic infrastructure and space to optimize flexibility for future uses and to accommodate interdisciplinary use of the spaces for maximized class scheduling opportunities.

AGORA EXTENSION
University of Northern British Columbia

With the addition of a new Laboratory Building to the UNBC Campus, the covered pedestrian circulation needed a 1,858 sm expansion to accommodate campus traffic throughout the year and to create new conference, meeting facility to support campus activities with a focus on celebrating science.

'DTO' FACILITY
